The conciseness
and immediate impact of the images offered by the dance are particularly
suitable for quick, dazzling presentation of a world which is developed
over many volumes of literature. Tchekhov represents eternal Russia, with
its sucidal anguish, passionate excesses and intimate dramas experienced
by tortured characters who are ruled by a social system where the strong
trample on the weak, and where shabby bureaucrats mix with frantic aristocrats
and women escaping into their dreams. The choreography discerns and sketches
the essential features with the attention of a clarity generating interest
and emotion, without idle chatter. The rigour of the scenery and music
accompanies the romantic atmosphere, avoiding fol-de-rol and tears. Humour
also comes through the dramatic tension. The sign language created by
Gigi Caciuleanu is clearly renewed, and he proves that he has radically
evolved his choreography.
